Celebration of 88 Death Anniversary of H.K. Singh

Different Churches in the Khasi, Jaintia district of Meghalaya and Karbi Anglong District of Assam celebrated the 88 death Anniverary of the founder of Unitarian Church in the region. Babu Hajom Kissor Singh Lyngdoh Nongbri died on the 13 of November 1923 at Puriang a village about 19 KM from Jowai and 40 KM from Shillong. H.K. Singh was cremated in the villages.


To celebrate the occasion service was held at the Unitarian Church, Madan Laban Shillong and Rev. H.H.Mohrmen Minister of the Unitarian Union was a guest speaker on the occasion.

Nangroilang Charitable Trust distribute financial help

 Nangroilang Charitable a Trust, a trust supported by the Unitarian Church, Puriang and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax Virginia had today extended financial support to 20 individuals of Puriang village.

The trust which was started in the year 2007 has been able to provide financial support to more than 50 residents of the village since the year of its inception. The trust was started with the support of the then Sordar of the village Mr. Keb Mynsong and Mariabait Marboh as the general secretary in the year 2007.

Today 20 residents of the village which includes children, men and women were presented with a financial support by the Sordar of the Village Mr. Atlas Kharlukhi.  Recipients of the benefits include 4 children who are mentally challenged, one girl who is hearing impaired and many men and women who has suffered from chronic ailments.

Financial support was also provided to person who has lost his house to fire and another who has lost his house due to rain storm.

Speaking on the occasion the headman of the village, wishes that the trust will be able to lend their support to individual in need in the future too. The Sordar also lauded the Trust for extending its support to the deserving resident of the villages irrespective of their religious affiliation. The meeting which was held at the Unitarian Secondary School, Puriang was chaired by Rev. H.H.Mohrmen.

Pyngrope urged Parents to take Part in their Children’s Education

Speaker of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and MLA Sohryngkham constituency Charles Pyngrope speaking at the Parents’ day celebration of the Unitarian Secondary School, Puriang urged upon the parents to take active role in educating their kids. Speaking as the Chief Guest of the function Pyngrope also said that it is not enough for the parents to just get their wards educated, it is equally important that the children are also computer literate.

The School organised a one day Parents' meeting today the 27 of October 2011 at the school premises in the presence of a large gathering of parents and students.

Addressing a large gathering of the parents, the speaker also said to the parents that they may not be aware with terms like internet, e mail and etc but your kids will have to know all these things, or maybe they already know the speaker said. 

He also urged upon the students not to dropout from school until they complete their studies. Pyngrope also appreciate the managing committee of the school and the Unitarian church, Puriang for rendering and a valuable service to the community.

The Unitarian Secondary School Puriang is the first secondary in the area and it caters to the need of more than 5 villages in the area.

The students of the school, showcased their talents to their parents by presenting varieties of items on the parents’ day celebration. The items presented by the students comprises of dancing, singing and skit.The meeting which was chaired by Rev. H.H.Mohmen was also addressed among others by David Nongrum, A Kharlukhi Sordar of Puriang, M.Marboh Chairman SMC, and from among the parents a speech was delivered by R.Mawthoh.


Unitarian Secondary School Puriang is also being sponsored by the Unitarian Cniversalist Congregation, Fairfax, Virginia, USA.

18 September : Unitarian Church Anniversary Day

Every year on the 18 of September Unitarians in Meghalaya and Assam and now even in Bangladesh celebrates the founding anniversary of the church with pomp and gaiety. In a nutshell the first Unitarian Church in the region was started by H.K.Singh and three of his followers u Mar Sutnga, ka men Hirbon Lakadong and u Kat Chylla in the house of Kat Chylla at Jowai on the 18^th of September 1887. That was the first time that a Unitarian service was held in the region and the occasion was celebrated by the Unitarians in the area since then. The 18^th of September is also a public holiday in the state of Meghalaya.

The Anniversary of the founding of the church was the most important day for the Unitarians in this part of the world. Unlike our fellow Unitarians the world over, the Unitarian in this region do not celebrate Christmas, Easter or any Christian festivals therefore the Anniversary day is the most important day for the Unitarians here.

Churches in the area started the celebration by organizing home services in the residence of each member of the congregation. Some Churches started their home-service since the beginning of the month of August and some like Jowai Church started yesterday. During the evening there will be services the entire weeks till the 18 of September.

On the red letter day churches organized different kind of celebration which may include a community feast.

Unitarian Youths’ Workshop

The leaders of the Youths from the different Unitarian churches of Unitarian Union met on the 23^rd of July to discuss on the proposed new Youth Ministry proposal of the Unitarian Union Northeast India. The workshop which was facilitated by Rev. H.H.Mohrmen was held at the Unitarian Church Madan Laban Campus.

The new Youth Ministry proposal is designed to improve the working of the Youth wing of the Unitarian Union and also to develop a close working relationship between the Faith development Committee of the UUNI and the Youth of the group of the Unitarian Union.

The one day workshop was a success and it was closed by Rev. D.P. Pariat President UUNI and Rev. N. Suting the General Secretary. The Leaders of the Youths from different Churches has discussed thread bear the proposed Youth Ministry paper and has agreed with proposals proposed in the document.
